Advantages of Metatags

Metatags are important because they impact how your site appears in the SERPs and how many people will be inclined to click through to your website. They will therefore impact your traffic and engagement rates, which can impact your SEO and rankings. Metatags are an important part of a solid SEO strategy. 

Many of these metatags, such as the title tags and the meta description length, will impact how relevant your site appears in SERPs. When users receive their list of results, they will see your site title and a short description of your content-the meta description. 

Users scan this information to see if they should click on a particular result. Including your main keyword naturally in these sections can boost your apparent relevance on the SERP, increasing your click-through rate. Since your SEO title tag also appears in the tab for your webpage, when users have multiple pages open, this title can help entice the user to click back over to your content and further engage with your page.

Disadvantages of Metatags

When you use it, you are telling your competitors exactly what keywords you are optimizing each page for. 

Competitors can take those lists that you carefully crafted and optimize their own sites for the same keywords.

Time spent working on meta keyword tags is time taken away from optimizing your site for those keywords, which is more important.

Ways to Improve Metatags:

  • Check whether all your pages and your content have title tags and meta descriptions
  • Start paying more attention to your headings and how to structure your content
  • Do not forget to mark up your images with alt text
  • Use robot metatags to guide search engines on how they should access your content
  • Search for duplicate pages, and use canonical tags to avoid cannibalizing your own content with duplicate or similar content
  • Create a checklist of the steps that you need to repeat when you create new content and turn meta tags into a part of your routine.
