Invention of WWW and E-commerce (Blog#07)

World Wide Web (WWW)

Invention of WWW:

Tim-Berners Lee, a British scientist, invented the world wide web in 1989, while working at the CERN. The web was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automated information sharing between scientists in universities institutes around the world.

Documents and downloadable media are made available to the network through web servers and can be accessed by the programs such as web browsers. Servers and resources on the world wide web are located through character strings called Uniform Resource Locaters (URLs). The original and still very common document type is HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

Web navigation or Web surfing, is the common practice of following hyperlinks (embedded URLs) across multiple websites. Web applications are web pages that function as application software. The information in the web is transferred across the internet using the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP).

The Web was originally conceived as document management system. It was invented by Tim-Berners lee in 1989 at CERN, which was later on made available to public in 1991.

E-commerce

Invention of E-commerce:

E-commerce originated in a standard for the exchange of business documents, such as orders or invoices, between the suppliers and their business customers. These exchanges date back to 1948-49, Berlin blockade and airlift with a system of ordering goods primarily via telex. Various industries elaborated upon that system in the ensuing decades before the first general standard was published in 1975. The resulting in computer-to-computer Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standard is flexible enough to handle most simple electronic business transactions.

With the wide adoption of the internet and the first introduction of world wide web in 1991 and if the first browser in 1993, most e-commerce shifted to the internet. Most recently, with the global spread of the smart phones and high speed internet broadband connections, much e-commerce moved to mobile devices, such as laptops, desktops, smart phones, etc.

Modern e-commerce encompasses all of the touch points and processes throughout the entire consumer journey. This means that all the tools, processes and technologies used to create the online offer are critical to the overall definition.

Websites like amazon.com, aliexpress.com, shopify.com, etc. These websites have really revolutionized the vertical of e-commerce for the many years to come.
